Bruce performed the song only once:

1972-02-04 Back Door (The), Richmond, VA

This song was performed only once during a single show, with The Bruce Springsteen Band the sole act on the bill. This was opening night of 9-show residency that encompassed three of the four weekends in February. Southside Johnny was a guest on the first weekend. However Southside's harp playing is only heard on one track, "Bright Lights, Big City". Bruce handles the harmonica on "I Just Can't Change", one of his better songwriting efforts of 1971. Two other standout songs are "Like A Stranger" and "Make Up Your Mind". The most interesting track is the full band version of "Cowboys Of The Sea", a song that clearly foreshadows the change of lyric style that Bruce was adopting at the time. Bruce also covered The Cookies' "I'm Into Something Good".

Songinfo

"Take Out Some Insurance" also known as "Take Out Some Insurance on Me, Baby (If You Love Me, Baby)" or on many releases simply as "Take Out Some Insurance on Me Baby" is a blues song released in 1959 by Jimmy Reed and credited to Jesse Stone. The copyright registration for the song lists its title as "Take Out Some Insurance on Me, Baby". Jimmy Reed recorded "Take Out Some Insurance" (with that title) in early 1959 and released the record in April. On June 22, 1961, Tony Sheridan and the Beatles played a cover version of the song. It was recorded in Hamburg while the Beatles were playing at the Top Ten Club. After the Beatles became popular, Polydor prepared two singles of unreleased material, one of which contained their recording of this song (1964). Due to the song's relative obscurity and the fact that the lyrics that Sheridan sang are almost entirely different from Reed's version, the song was mistitled at first as "If You Love Me, Baby". When the singles were sent to Atlantic Records in the United States for release in that country, apparently someone recognized the song (and copyrighted it to Singleton and Hall).

Other cover versions

On June 22, 1961, Tony Sheridan and the Beatles played a cover version of the song. It was recorded in Hamburg while the Beatles were playing at the Top Ten Club. Bert Kaempfert produced the session for Polydor, but the recording was not immediately released. After the Beatles became popular, Polydor prepared two singles of unreleased material, one of which contained their recording of this song. Corrected labels of the June album, The Beatles' First (German Polydor LPHM 46-432), show the proper title; the album was released in England in 1967.

Bruce on the artist

Lyrics

If you leave me, baby, say you won't be back
That would be the end of me, 'cause I'd have a heart attack
You better get some insurance on me, baby, take out some insurance on me, baby
'Cause if you ever, ever say goodbye, I'm gonna haul right off and die
Darlin', how I love you, long as I got breath
If we part, I know sweetheart, it would worry me to death
You better get some insurance on me, baby, take out some insurance on me, baby
'Cause if you ever, ever say goodbye, I'm gonna haul right off and die
Don't get no sick and accident, 'cause I'm healthy as can be
Now, if ya got any sense, you'd take the hint and get a Penn Life, on me
You don't know me, baby, like I know myself,
I couldn't live if you should give your love to someone else
Better get some insurance on me, baby, take out some insurance on me, baby
'Cause if you ever, ever say goodbye, I'm gonna haul right off and die
